In this Wiki is the story of Jeremiah Talus, a slave on a plantation in the 1850s until he decides he can't stand his life there any more and is willing to risk everything to gain freedom. He's heard that there are people willing to help fugitives through the secret Underground Railroad: not a railroad and not under ground.
